YWCA Connecting to the Community Award

  • YWCA Connecting to the Community Award

I am very proud to announce that I am a finalist in the YWCA Women of Distinction Awards. I have been nominated in the category of Entrepreneurship alongside some very amazing women. This award is special to me as it highlights my accomplishments in business, whereas past acknowledgements have been to Beyond Beige’s designs. It has been quite a journey these past 10 years, growing my business from a basement suite apartment to an office of 10 talented women. Thank you to everyone who has supported me and helped me grow Beyond Beige Interior Design.

I am also in the running to win the YWCA Connecting the Community Award. With your help I will have an opportunity to allocate $10,000 to safe and affordable housing – all you need to do is vote online for me. You can vote once every 24 hours until Friday, May 23rd at noon. The nominee with the most votes will receive the Connecting the Community Award and Scotiabank will donate $10,000 to the program area of her choice.

2014 Spring Design Trends

  • 2014 Spring Design Trends

If you think spring cleaning is enough, you’re wrong. Recently so many have been asking us, ‘what are some easy ways to bring spring into my home?’ The list is endless, ranging in price and complexity. However two of the trendiest trends worth considering are incorporating the lovely shade of radiant orchid as well as incorporating polished brass. Warming up to this seasons ‘it’ colour is the easier, more cost effective option. Simple ways to incorporate this colour are through toss cushions, switching out the art on your gallery wall, reupholstering an old chair, or even a bouquet of flowers.

Incorporating polished brass into your home is another great way to brighten up for spring. Unlike radiant orchid, this design trend transitions much better into other seasons. Easy cost effective ways to bring this trend into your home is through flatware. Try switching out your old silver utensils for a new fabulous polished brass set. Another relatively easy way to incorporate this trend is through lighting. Whether it be a table lamp or hanging fixture, you are able to mold this design trend to your preferred taste. If you’re feeling bold, look to your kitchen hardware. Faucets, hood fans, and cabinet hardware are all going gold. We love this concept so much we used it in the kitchen of one of our luxury homes on Vancouver’s Westside, Arbutus.

North West Design Awards

  • North West Design Awards

On Thursday March 6th our whole team went south to Seattle, Washington. Prior to our trip we had learned we had won two North West Design Awards and could not wait to collect our hardware! The Seattle Design Center threw the best gala we have ever been to. The awards ceremony was an all-white event, decorated beautifully, full of incredibly talented company. Many of whom were Canucks too! During the gala we saw west coast design at its best. Many winning projects had a laid back feel, full of wood and stone. Contrary to this theme, both of our winning projects came from our must sumptuous project to date, Arbutus – Classic Luxury.  We left with a runner up award for Best Bathroom, for the Arbutus master en suite. As well as winning the category Most Innovative Design Feature, for the Arbutus feature stairwell wall.

We feel so lucky to have been included in this event, mingling with the best in the business. Their work was incredibly inspiring. We hope to return next year with our best work yet!

Ann Sacks Showroom

  • Ann Sacks Showroom

During our short trip to Seattle, we made sure to drop into Ann Sacks. Once located in the Seattle Design Center, it has now moved to its very own sleek storefront. It’s quite possible we spent more time in Ann Sacks than all of the Seattle Design Center combined! We really were kids in a candy store. Although their entire product line is amazing, we found a few tiles that are perfect for some of our current projects. First was a beautiful gold tile; dramatic, over the top, fabulous. It is just right for one of our newest luxury properties.  Ann Sacks was also teaming with clean and classic blue tiles. A colour continuously repeated through one of our current, laid back, beach inspired projects. And lastly a tasteful red tile, ideal for the backsplash of a nautical kitchen.  After they pried the samples from our hands we returned to Vancouver knowing we would be back very, very, soon.

Seattle Design Center

  • Seattle Design Center

In early March our whole team took a trip to Seattle, Washington. We had won two North West Design Awards and we were making the trek to collect our hardware. On the day of the gala we arrived early and spent hours in the Seattle Design Center. As designers, our senses went into overdrive as we all scattered across the showrooms, inspecting our favourite pieces.

We saw a lot of products we know and love. Many of them we use on our projects. We also saw fabulous new materials we can’t wait to incorporate in future designs. Sadly for these beautiful Tibetan doors, we don’t think they will be making an appearance in any of our upcoming projects.

More on our North West Design Award wins will be featured in upcoming newsletters.

Las Vegas Furniture Show

  • Las Vegas Furniture Show

Recently our senior designer Lindsay Levin and I took a trip down to the Las Vegas Furniture Show. This is an annual trade-show that showcases furniture from every style imaginable. To put it in perspective, the show consists of 3 buildings, roughly 12 stories each, with 40 vendors per floor. Yup, that’s a lot of furniture! Over our few days there a few trends became apparent to us. First, there were a lot of sumptuous sofas. Large and over-sized with tactical finishes, soft pillows, and some velvet. Very cozy and chic.

Another trend that’s still alive and flourishing is industrial. Consistently throughout all three buildings were pieces made of wood and metal. Many of them juxtaposed with femme items like the over-sized tufted sofa pictured. Lastly there was a lot of gold. Gold was often paired with white and was present across all styles at the Las Vegas Furniture Show. For those on the cutting edge, who have grown tired of gold are now starting to move to copper. Definitely a new trend to be aware of moving into Spring.

Vancouver Home Magazine

  • Vancouver Home Magazine

This past fall we had the honor of being featured in the inaugural edition of Vancouver Home magazine. We were incredibly excited as this publication has had such great success in Montreal and Toronto. In that edition I sat down with them to discuss Beyond Beige’s project Hamilton, in full detail. It resulted in a 14 page feature full of images and my inspiration.

In their most current issue, The Winter Edition, I was lucky enough to sit down with them again. In an 8 page feature we covered how Beyond Beige’s newest project Arbutus, came to be. Glamorous western design married with Asian flair. With a chandelier fit for a cruise ship, three story feature wall, gold plated cabinet handles, 24 karat gold mosaic tiles, and a $4,000 gold-plated toilet bowl, luxury is absolutely the name of the game. The living room from the Arbutus project is also featured on the Cantonese version’s cover.

You can find the latest edition of Vancouver Home Magazine on newsstands now!
